 Our Brand Naming Strategy

What’s in a name? A brilliant name can be the main differentiator for your brand. A great name sets the scene for the whole brand identity. A brand name should convey the personality, hopes and goals of a brand. You can see this when you look at some of the Top 100 companies all over the world such as Google, Facebook, Coca-Cola etc.

We use the following basic routes to help shape a brand identity and to choose a powerful and effective brand name. Brand naming projects we have worked on include Mayday and Brickowner.

Brand Naming Conventions

There a few different routes to take when naming a new brand:

1. Functional or Descriptive Names – This type of brand name is used to educate the customer and make it clear what the company offers. Examples of this include Paypal, making it clear that Paypal is a simple payment platform.
2. Acronyms – This is an abbreviation of a descriptive company name. This type of name can be bold and easily remembered. Examples of this include UPS, this stands for United Parcel Service.
3. Invented Names – This means a completely make up name for a brand. Benefits of this is that the brand is starting on a clean slate and there are no previous associations with the brand name. Examples of this include Google.
4. Aspirational or Evocative Names – These types of brand name are used to evoke a certain emotion and experience for the customer. They can often be metaphors for the aspirations of the brand itself. Choosing an aspirational name requires a brand to have a clear vision of its identity and goals. Examples of this type of name include Virgin.
